The paint industry in Mauritius has undergone considerable development during the past years. Painting a house was until recently considered as a non-essential operation. However, growing awareness on prevention of corrosion through the application of paints has provided a massive impetus to the development of the industry. This sector employs some 525 employees.
Presently there are 6 companies are presently engaged in the production of paint products and they cater mainly for the local market, whilst keeping a tab on exports in the region. The chart below gives an overview on the growth in export performance.
Today, our companies manufacture a wide range of eco-friendly paints specifically for decorative, automotive, marine, high-performance and road marking coatings as well as varnishes, lacquers, sealers and primers.
The Chemical sector consists of some 35 players (most of them being DOEs) and employs 1700 persons. The products manufactured are:
- Toilet & laundry soap, speciality soap
- Shampoo & hair conditioner
- Perfumes & toilet waters
- Essential oils
- Gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide)
- Dyes and pigments
- Printing inks
Domestic Exports of Chemicals sector increased by 48% over the period 2014-2015, from Rs 333.7 mn to Rs 492.4 mn.
