Dear Valued Reader

MAKING A DIFFERENCE..

In this fast changing and highly competitive global market place, suppliers the world over have to continuously adapt to the even faster changing consumer needs and demands and to customer exigencies by adopting newer technologies and management practices. This is true for all industries, but is particularly critical in the fashion industry, which thrives on innovation, new product introductions, shorter and faster deliveries, customer care, and above all price sensitivity. This, in turn calls for a paradigm shift from "eyes in the sky to ears on the ground" approach.

For Mauritian suppliers to compete on the world market, they must not only stay in the competition but rather they must beat the competition by being nimble, innovative, creative, customer centric and by better collaborating with the different supply chain partners to minimize risks and optimise value creation in the total "design to delivery" value chain.

The 2013 Gartner Survey on the apparel industry reveals that 54% of industry respondents are not fully prepared to face the challenges of the new supply chain prerequisites, which go beyond the tradition operational issues relating to rising input costs, downward pressures on prices, labour issues, complex regulatory and standard requirements, increasing sources of competition, volatile exchange rates, rising logistics and distribution costs, corporate social responsibility, and other internal day to day issues. The emerging environment requires that our suppliers have the ability to anticipate, understand and manage consumer as well as customer needs and expectations. Hence the need to have deeper insight, on real time basis, of what the market wants.

It was in this perspective that Enterprise Mauritius organised the 2013 Trend Forum, which brought together, for the first time in Mauritius, 11 fashion designers and experts from Paris, Italy, London, Cape Town and Dubai/Toronto who shared with our entrepreneurs, designers and students the latest trends in design, in fabrics and materials, in colours and shades, in cuts and silhouettes, accessories and prints, treatment and finishing, among other pertinent topics and issues. It was a successful and enriching exercise. The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection Hon. Cader Sayed-Hossen officially opened the Trend Forum and announced the setting up of an International Advisory Council of Designers to assist , support and advise our local fashion industry, so as to enhance the visibility of Mauritius as a differentiated sourcing destination . We are now adjusting our focus on the Mauritius Brand. Befittingly, the Chairman of Enterprise Mauritius launched the Designers Council of Mauritius.

TeamEM is thus assembling all the pre-requisites to empower our local entrepreneurs make the difference on the local, regional and international markets. Effectively, Mauritian Rums have now set the bar high winning major international recognitions and Awards at the recent Berlin Rumfest, which augurs well for exports from Mauritius.

On the export market front, exports from Mauritius continue to be resilient with our Total Domestic Exports for the first 3 quarters (Jan-Sept 2013) reaching Rs 43,871 bn compared to Rs 41,113 bn for the corresponding period last year, representing an increase of 6.7%. The seafood sector together with Pearls and Precious Stones and medical sector are the driving force. Interestingly, exports to non- traditional markets continue to grow from strength to strength at around 19%.

TeamEM, will continue to work on a multidimensional marketing approach to consolidate our acquisition on our traditional markets and expand our reach out on the non- traditional markets.

The 2014 Action Plan effectively comprises several promotional actions on emerging and new markets for we believe that growth will come through creativity, innovation and value-added products and services, which TeamEM undertakes to deliver in positioning Mauritius as Viable and Reliable Sourcing Destination, with a difference.

Our 2014 Action Plan will be posted on our website shortly.

We wish you a pleasant reading.
